Octopi, Sea Creatures and Air pilots

These are series of study sketches ( with a twist , the colour finishing) for a collaborative character design task . The theme is Air pilots, but they have descended from sea creatures, (shown in images underneath).
They are extremely quick to draw, each taking roughly 30-40 min. I am keen to boldly explore use of colour and some new visual depicting techniques ( Thanks for the tips to Tom McDowell, great artist! ).

Life Drawing at Angel

Yesterday a group of us went to Angel, (a place close to New Designers venue actually) for a life drawing session. It has been a while since I last time did figure drawing, perhaps 4-5  months ago. So I found it extremely enjoyable after such a long break :] Also, to all of our pleasure, we had a really interesting model.

Painting with Cintiq, New Winds

Last week it was my first time ever I got to get close to one of them Cintiq screens, and I can only say it feels as it could develop into some form of addiction to drawing :D Really great tool! So, if there is good 20 minutes free, I exercise in sketching. So these two below are my first attempts (:]

This octopus, I imagine, should be first of the series of sea creatures, which I am studying for a personal collaborative character design project (more about it when I upload few more examples in the future). I study real life reference , but to make it more of a interesting task,   as well as explore character colour palettes, I just experiment with colour and composition

Another hour-long drawing was done for a topic by Illustration Friday Challenge:

It's been 3 solid  weeks of drawing every day! ( yay!) and I feel like my hand is back from the dead, so to say. I hope there will be lots more to share (:]

A Test Toy Design Task for Mcdonald's Happy Meal, Monsters inc Theme

Following New Designers show, I was contacted by The Marketing Store, a company delivering marketing campaigns and toys for McDonalds, various films such as Aardman’s ‘The Pirates’ and many other companies. I was invited to attent an iterview with 4 product designers and mechanical engineers. After good three weeks they informed there was a brief task prepared. I had two weeks of time to create several toy designs for McDonald’s Happy Meal following Monsters inc. theme. After a successfull presentation I contacted shortly that day with an offer to join a 6 weeks internship! Layout Design for a Restaurant-manor Website

I guess you can't call your self a freelancing digital artist if you don't have a web design task along the way. Last week I too was crossed by such task for the  first time.  I designed a simple web layout. It happens so, that I did this job for one of my beloved places I used to go with friends and family, a restaurant-manor 'Radailiu Dvaras' just few miles away from my home city, Klaipeda.

I am learning tricks and techniques along the way, but as far as the client is concerned, it fully satisfies their current need and it is still in process of tweaking.

Work on VFX for Viola Films webisodes 'Mechanical Me''

A fair while ago, must've been good three weeks ago, I was taken by Viola Films producers and asked to help out with some visual effects for their three web episodes "Mechanical Me" . Essentially my task was to develop aftereffects layouts, which later could be applied to many various shots.

This video quickly shows some effects I have developed and applied to shots :

Given the time restriction (1 week for one 10 min. episode) and general scale of the project, the effects, also other aspects such as props, costumes etc. had quality restrains to them. However, I was glad to explore some new fields to me, such as working with green screen. I have delivered something both producers, Sam Supple and Debra McGee, were happy with. Some other work included designing logos , etc.:

Volunteering Experience at SIGGRAPH 2012,Los Angeles

So a bit more than a week a go Los Angeles was not only crowded with Stars of Hollywood , but with professionals and aspirers of CGI and VFX industries.

Photobucket

Over 5 days, SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques) presented many technical papers within the context of computer graphics and interactive technologies, production sessions of the most resent feature films , ( The Amazing Spider man, Marvel’s Avengers, Paranorman, Brave and so on) . Also, the very popular exhibition hall was crowded with industries giants such as Autodesk, Pixologic, Nvidia, The Foundry; Laika, Disney, DreamWorks etc.

Partaking 300 other students chosen from the vast 1600 applicants and with some sponsorship from UCA, I had great honour to be volunteering at this grandiose event. My duties included registering guests, directing them to the event rooms, promoting SIGGRAPH Asia, answering any questions and maintaining general order of the event.

The perks of this event were many opportunities for networking between both, peers and professionals. Every day was concluded with some sort of after-even, such as desert reception, 25 years of Houdini celebration, ACM Chapters party and so on.

I had great luck talking to some creative’s behind Weta Digital, Star Trek Series, The Muppet Show, The Lion King.

Also, a bunch of volunteer were awarded for performing “above and beyond”. I got lucky to receive such gift too. Which was D’artiste Character Modelling.3: Master Class

It was fascinating and a connecting experience. I am in touch with many other creatives from 5 different continents, the world has never looked smaller! (:] Trully special thanks to Phil and Alan !

New Designers and the Outcome so Far

The recent event, New Designers is considered to be the UK’s most important graduate exhibition. Over 3,500 of the most talented newly graduated designers from across the nation came together making it an event  full of innovation and fresh thinking. I was extremely grateful and proud to be a part of this grandiose platform.

CG Arts and Animation stand nearly won the Best Stand Prise, and received numerous compliments both from professionals and peers ( Thanks to Phil''s and Alan's genius idea for the Zoe trope-themed stand! ).

The Wolves Within Character Presentation for New Designers

With this video for the Wolves presentation I believe my preperation for New Designers show is over.

Animation Reel

I have compiled a separate reel to give examples of my character animation. It showcases both 2D and 3D animating skills. I am hoping this is just an initial reel and I will be able to go back and refine some of the animation sequences.

The Baltic Pixie Animation

Pixies are charming fairytale character, different in Celtic, Germanic and Baltic folk stories. 'The Baltic Pixie' is an animated short presenting an intricate and ambiguous Pixie character from Baltic culture. The queen of all the pixies , Laumu Laume Vaiva, introduces her kind as inviting, yet dangerous creatures and it is revealed what gifts they’d bring and how dangerous they might become to an everyday man.

Part of professional presence, without a doubt, is business card. Also, it was  quit importantly, for the design of business card to sit nicely together with blog template, CV and self branding . After to and fro development and discussions with printing company I believe I’m settled with these ones. 500 copies on their way.

The Art of The Wolves Within Characters

Recently I have revisited the document for Wolves characters and am posting here a test template before going to order printed copies. I hope the new cover works, also the content itself.. I'm publishing the work I've done solely on characters in ‘The Wolves Within’ Project.
Rereading it lead to correcting some errors in the text. Hope you'll find it neat and engaging
