Storyboard Script, Adjusted Animatic and 'Laumikas' Concept

Tidying all the loose knots: storyboard script for my own convenience when further going to animating. Also it shows the planning of screen time, concerning the variety of shot structure.

I have revisited the animatic and added more panels for better flow and clarity. Shouldn't have changed that much in its essence

Lastly, in the animatic we see three other objects: the moon, the rainbow and the

'Laumikas, a sack of straws out of which a dwarf child grows!'

Draft animatic for The Baltic Pixie

I kept the soundtrack and the visual expressiveness to the minimum to capture bare effect of storytelling. This is animatic I consider a draft one , mapping out the basics of The Baltic Pixie character animation. I've chosen Jenny Dunbar's voiceover:

choice for shots is driven by the thought , that it is a character presentation type of animated short. Therefore there is only limited amounts of other objects (such as the moon, rowan leaf, "Laumikas" )

There is also a shot, toward the end, where Laume speaks of her kind bringing both, the kind will and villainy, where we don't see the character at all. I though this to be a chance for the soundtrack be manipulated to its max: anchoring from left side to the right side of the speakers. However, I'm looking for a visual idea to represent the line....

I'm sure to revisit and add extra panels to break down the the action even more so soon enough it will serve as a guide for reference-shooting, that is I'd try myself to "act out"  reference material for animating.

Trotting and Jumping Quadruped Animation

Here is another video of refined evil wolf run cycle. I've referenced oxes this time too so to add the heavyness in the run cycle. Also, for the good wolf I'm working on jump and flying animation

Animatic #6 with A Soundtrack Composed by David Keefe

Lately for The Wolves Within we were arranging to get someone to compose a soundtrack which would have both, Woodkid's - Iron and Native American tribe music feel to it. And to our big pleasure, Dave Keefe, aka Mustard Kid also a CG Arts  student who graduated few year ago, offered his help :]

The soundtrack you'll hear in this animatic, he calls a demo, adding that rithm can be changed, also not all the elements are yet in place.

Having that and some feedback on our latest animatic # 5, another one is piled together to further tackle the problems of rithm and mood.

Vizualising the Story of the Fight between two Wolves

Leo and I today have finally drawn out an image sequence which now covers the full story. The decision was for both of us to try and create an animatic , so to see each's take. (A note on the soundtrack, it was edited, so at some parts, the pacing music suggests rather falls off...)

This sequence embodies a metaphor. Two wolves , which represent the good and the bad side in each of us, race from the unconscious part of our psyche to the conscious one, with the aim to take over and  dominate one's entity . On the way each of the two seemingly take over. However, it all comes to an equal fight at the end, as the legend concludes, there is no single winer, as it is us who decide  which side will take over.

Performance Animatic

It was en exercise in visualizing  entire performance of the bird and answering   questions what would he do  at each point.  Hopefully these 216 panels give a  clear  flavor of the animation heading for.

(I posted here the second animatic with a fix at 2:39)

Story development: solving Act 3 problems

Few days ago I got some very constructive feedback from both Aland and Phil regarding the story and how the animated short is read by the audience. Essentially, act 3 wasn't clearly resolved and failed to convey the ideas intended. As well as soundtrack's tonality contradicted imagery. To solve it decision was made to change the ending.  Plot hasn't changed at all, and  themes remain the same only now the music is transcribed better.

Suggesting Ivan's Goals: Revisited Animatic

As previously discussed it was unclear what is the true goal and a driving point for the bird: is it to forfill his nature and become a true bird which can fly, or is it to keep on exploring new things as well as getting to discover more about yourself ? All of those things are true, but one more thing plays an important role: the Island's likenes to Ivan and the suggestion it is his true place to stay and  is his true home.

To convey this idea the Island and more particularly the nesting-box, is brought more as the main focus point.

Revisited ending

I think problems with the ending are solved. Hopefully even more clarity will be brought in pre-viz where the actual camera moves and angles will be seen.

Roughing out the Animation

I find this animatic closest to 'film' which constantly played in my head.

At some points I've approached it in experimental ways ( especially at the very end) in order to portray personal vision. It might look to be working and at the same time the opposite.

The Animation so far seem to reach 3 minutes. I couldn't seem to make it shorter from any angle. when it was 2 minutes I failed to convey anything at all.
There are changes from original storyboards as well.

The animatic :

Animatic for the Attack of 50ft Alien from Toyland ( "fixed")

This is the preproduced trailer of the Attack of 50ft Alien from Toyland. Hopefully all Void canvas intentions are projected in this animatic clearly.

Animatic for the Life cycle of a Slime Mold

The Animatic is a useful reference for the timing of animation later on in the stage of production. Though there will be changes.

Most importantly, this was the first time I started thinking about soundtrack so early ( before it was always considered only as a final touch). Now it is clear how much it can influence the later construction of animation as well as how much easier it is to imagine the action with the help of music.

Hopefully this piece of soundtrack ( from V for Vendetta (DIr. Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, 2005)) works.
